Australia is one of the harshest environments for outdoor furniture. Our intense UV index, coastal salt air, and long dry summers with occasional heavy rain mean that furniture which looks great in a showroom can look tired within twelve months if the wrong materials are chosen.

Aluminium is the top performer for Australian conditions — it does not rust, handles UV without fading, and is light enough to move easily. Powder-coated aluminium frames are the standard for quality pieces. Synthetic wicker (resin/wicker on aluminium frames) is excellent for patios and covered decks but avoid full-sun placement with cheaper versions — UV degrades the resin quickly. Teak and hardwood furniture is beautiful but requires regular oiling to prevent cracking in our dry summers.

Price guides: budget aluminium or steel pieces start around $200, mid-range with better cushions and construction sit $400–$1,000, and quality designer outdoor dining sets run $1,200–$3,000+. The sweet spot for a suburban entertaining area is a mid-range aluminium table with all-weather cushions at $600–$1,000.
